Future of oil and gas through technology, leadership, and change management (Digitalization)

2023-05-25T23:28:17-06:00

BRIAN WM. SCHULTE STUDENT SPROTT SCHOOL OF BUSINESS – CARLETON UNIVERSITY CEO SCHIEFER RESERVOIR CONSULTING, BSCHULTE@SCHIEFER-RESERVOIR.COM Abstract In today’s industry, many say geophysics is not needed because: There are too many wells, so it is easy to map the subsurface. Seismic does not have the resolution to see the thin sands. Have not had a lot of success with geophysics in this play. This sentiment is further expressed when artificial intelligence (AI), predictive or prescriptive analytics, or machine learning (ML) are discussed, with many feeling geophysicists (geoscientists) will soon be replaced with AI or ML. Despite what is being said, [...]

Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences Brings Canadian Geoscience Organisations Together

2023-06-01T13:13:58-06:00

RACHEL T. NEWRICK, PH.D. RACIAN VENTURES, RACHEL@RACIAN.CA MIKE HALL MIKE.HALL@GEOVECTRA.CA TOM SNEDDON MARMOT RESEARCH INC, TOM@MARMOTRESEARCH.CA RON LARSON RONLARSON1210@GMAIL.COM Abstract The Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES) is funded, in part, by your CSEG membership fees. This article provides information on what the CFES is, does, and how CSEG members benefit from it. Introduction What do Canadian geophysicists, geologists and geotechnical professionals have in common? (No, this is not the start of a bad joke.) They are all represented by the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES), an umbrella organisation of Canadian earth science societies. [...]

The Variogram Basics: A visual introduction to one of the most useful geostatistical concepts

2023-06-01T13:14:20-06:00

EVAN BROWN GEOSCIENCE CONSULTANT, EVAN@EXPERTENRESEARCH.COM This is a re-release of the best RECORDER paper of the 2021-2022 season, as voted by the RECORDER Committee. Congratulations to Evan on producing a well written and popular article! Figure 1. Stacked siliciclastic lacustrine strata of the late Mississippian West Bay formation, East Bay, Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada. Photo Credit David E Brown. Introduction The job of a petroleum geoscientist is rapidly transforming into a role that requires proficiency with statistical concepts and data management. The goal of this primer is to provide the reader, through words, basic examples and images, an understanding of [...]

Phase decomposition and its applications

2023-02-02T20:00:31-07:00

SATINDER CHOPRA SAMIGEO, CALGARY, SATINDER.CHOPRA@SAMIGEO.COM RITESH KUMAR SHARMA SAMIGEO, CALGARY JOHN CASTAGNA THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON KENNETH BREDESEN GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF DENMARK AND GREENLAND (GEUS), COPENHAGEN | Abstract We discuss the recently introduced phase decomposition analysis, which entails amplitude variation with time as a function of the seismic reflection phase. Assuming a zero-phase wavelet embedded in the seismic data, while flat spots or unresolved water contacts may be seen on the zero-phase component, in seismically thin layers, impedance changes will show up on phase components that are 90° out of phase with the wavelet. Thus, bright spots caused by thin [...]

An Environmentally Friendly Low-Frequency Seismic Source

2023-02-02T11:17:13-07:00

SHUKI RONEN | SERCEL AND STANFORD UNIVERSITY | Summary This is the story of how airguns evolved into an environmentally friendly low-frequency seismic source. It started with a test performed by Veritas DGC that showed the value of low-frequency signal and the failure of conventional airguns to make it commercially viable. It was continued by a few ex-Veritas people in Dolphin Geophysical who saw the promise of a new source and tested a small prototype. Dolphin went bankrupt before it could fund the manufacturing and testing of a full-scale source. That was done by a start-up company, Low Impact Seismic [...]

Review of global warming, climate change, renewables, CCUS, geothermal and the geoscience involved: Part 3

2023-02-02T11:18:58-07:00

Brian Wm. Schulte | Schiefer Reservoir, bschulte@schiefer-reservoir.com | Author’s note This is the third part to a three-part article, and it was written so all three parts are one article. Introduction This part’s goal is to look at CCUS, which is necessary if we continue to use fossil fuels during the energy transition. This involves the utilization and storage of supercritical CO2 (SCCO2), geothermal energy, and the geoscience that tends to be utilized by EOR. The geoscience will be critical, and it will involve real time data, passive monitoring, Discrete Fiber Optic Sensing, downhole measurements, and surface measurements, etc. which [...]
