The CSEG Mentorship Committee organized a professional development workshop on January 25, 2024 with Jilliane Yawney, in partnership with GeoWomen of Calgary. This in-person event was held in Calgary (at 715, 5th Ave SW) and the venue was graciously sponsored by Earth Signal Processing. The event was free to attend, included a delicious lunch, and had a great turn-out. With over 50 pairings of mentee’s and mentors, the Mentorship program continues to grow and achieve success this year. Networking within our geoscience community was enjoyed by all.

Jilliane Yawney’s presentation, titled Fearlessly Engaging: Gain your audience’s respect despite your nerves and uncertainty, was very well received. Jilliane is a speaking coach who focuses on teams and individuals within Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) companies. Her work history, background, and experience was a great learning experience for the Mentorship Program. The presentation focused on how to be engaging to an audience through structure and activities, voice and body language, and emotion. There was excellent discussion of how to prepare for an important presentation, why it is beneficial to aim for flexibility over perfection, and how to deal with performance anxiety. Participants mentioned that it was great opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills. If you or someone you know is interested in presentation training, please contact Jilliane for one-on-one or group options at

Thank you to the committee volunteers including Jeff Calvert, Sarah Grant, Mike Finn, Chris Bird, Stephen Kotkas, Jen Bors, Cole Narfason, Ashlee Fudge, and Alessandro Carducci.

On February 28, 2024 the Mentorship Committee is hosting an Ask Me Anything (AMA) virtual session with Neil Ethier from Eavor from 12:00PM-1:00PM. Please join us and contribute to the conversation! We will be discussing Neil’s career and experiences which lead him to his current role as the International Oil and Gas Business Development Vice President at Eavor. To register, please follow

We also have a mentor resource list that is a great tool for all Mentors. This resource list is composed of subject matter experts from a wide range of geoscience topics, and mentors can reach out to these subject matter experts to ask questions and obtain information that they can use in their relationship with their mentees. The resource list for 2024 will be confidentially released to mentors soon.

Finally, please mark your calendar for Monday July 8, 2024 for the Stampede Lunch, it will be a great time!

If you are interested in learning more about the mentorship community, please reach out! We always love getting new mentors and mentees.
