The Conventional Future: Complex Reservoir Challenges in Frontier Land Basins

Achieving exploration success in onshore frontier land basins is as difficult today as it was 20 years ago. Certainly, our ability to image complex structures and characterize reservoirs has improved, but the main risks of structure, trap, migration, and seal are as pertinent today as they were back then. With the emergence of unconventional or tight oil and gas and deepwater prospecting, our focus as an industry has tended to drift away from conventional land exploration problems. However, this part of the industry not only still exists, but is thriving in less mature basins worldwide. In regions like Kurdistan, Albania, Colombia, Pakistan, East Africa and Papua New Guinea, to name a few, conventional land exploration in complex geological environments is still the dominant industry activity. With this in mind the committee for the 1stCSEG/EAGE Land Seismic Workshop invites abstracts and attendees from across the globe to discuss the state of the art in data acquisition and processing for imaging, reservoir characterization, and interpretation in structurally or stratigraphically complex land basins.

This three day workshop will take a holistic approach to presenting and discussing the aforementioned themes with a limited group (150 participants) of processors, interpreters, technical professionals, and service providers. Interaction and discussion are key components to this workshop, and in that spirit there will be no printed notes and handouts (unless specifically approved by the speaker) to encourage discussion of timely and sensitive topics that are relevant to the industry. The steering committee will assess all proposed contributions to the workshop.  If your work or presentation contribution falls within the workshop’s geophysical themes as relevant to the following frontiers, please consider attending this important workshop.

  • Foothills exploration
  • Foreland basins
  • Rift basins
  • Stratigraphically complex conventional plays

Presentation contributions will be considered for either oral or poster formats.
