Seismic Geomorphology and Seismic Stratigraphy – Extracting Geologic Insights from 3D Seismic Data

Henry W. Posamentier

April 1 - 2, 2020
8:30am – 4:30pm
Sheraton Hotel
St. John’s, NL

The Doodleship Course and Core Workshop are both SOLD OUT.

This course is designed to enhance interpretation skill sets with regard to geologic interpretation of seismic data. The overall objective is to present seismic interpretation methods and workflows for reducing risk with regard to prediction of lithology, reservoir compartmentalization, and stratigraphic trapping potential in exploration and production. In addition, correct identification of depositional settings provides necessary context to standard geophysical analyses. Specifically, the participant will be shown:

  • Workflows designed to facilitate extraction of stratigraphic insights from 3D seismic data
  • Techniques for 3D seismic geomorphologic/stratigraphic analyses
  • Numerous examples of various depositional systems in different depositional environments (i.e., fluvial, marginal marine, deep-water) – recognition of those patterns of geological significance is critical to successful application of these workflows
  • Discussion of the pitfalls in seismic interpretation with examples

  • Career highlights - Senior Geological Advisor with Chevron Energy Technology Company; Chief Geologist with Anadarko Petroleum; and Senior Exploration and Research Advisor with both ARCO and Exxon Production Research Company
  • Widely published - Research interests have been in the fields of sequence stratigraphy and depositional systems analysis. Most recently, he has employed an interdisciplinary approach to the prediction of lithofacies distribution through time and space by integrating stratigraphy, geomorphology, and depositional systems analysis, using 3D seismic visualization integrated with borehole data
  • AAPG Distinguished Lecturer in the US, Former Soviet Union, Middle East and Europe
  • Awards - Pettijohn Medal for excellence in sedimentology from the Society for Sedimentary geology (SEPM), the William Smith Medal for contributions to applied and economic aspects of geology from the Geological Society of London and the Robert Berg Award for Outstanding Petroleum Research from the AAPG
  • Distinctions - Fulbright Fellow to Austria
