CSEG’s COVID-19 Response

The Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) has been following the evolving situation regarding COVID-19. Since being declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and given the Alberta Government’s statement to cancel all large gatherings of more than 250 people, along with precautionary measures taken by other Canadian provinces, the CSEG has decided to postpone or cancel all CSEG and CSEG Foundation events until further notice.

The health and safety of our volunteers, staff, members and supporters is our paramount concern and that is why we have made this decision and will continue to monitor the situation closely and make additional decisions as needed.

At this time, the following events have been postponed or tentatively rescheduled:

  • Postponed until Fall 2020: GeoConvention, Challenge Bowl, Symposium, CSEG Brainstorming Session
  • Tentatively rescheduled to April 2020: Annual General Meeting and Technical luncheon, New Board Orientation, Volunteer Appreciation – subject to further change as needed
  • Postponed until 2021: Destination Learning Series Canada (DLSC), Canadian Distinguished Lecturer (CDL), Geophysical Industry Field Trip (GIFT)
  • Rescheduled to a later date: Doodleship course and core workshop in St. John’s Newfoundland.
  • Please note that Travel Grants and Learning Subsidies (TGLS) will be reconsidered when the associated event has been rescheduled.

The following events have been cancelled:

  • Earth Science for Society (ESfS)
  • Chief Geophysicists Forum (March meeting cancelled)

All committee Chairs and volunteers of our social events including T-Wave, JGF/EPP, WiSE, Fun Run scheduled for later in the year should stay on alert and be prepared to postpone or cancel their event as required.

We recommend at this time that ALL board and committee meetings, including RECORDER, MUG, Lunchbox, and those involved in the Mentorship program, provide an online option to dial in for audio or video conferencing. If you choose to have meetings in person, we require that you abide by all public safety tips provided by your local authority to protect yourself and others. This includes handwashing, cough and sneeze into a tissue, avoid touching your face and keep social distance wherever possible.

We ask that no new or additional expenses be incurred at this time without consulting with your committee Chair and CSEG Board.

Please contact the CSEG office for reimbursements of required cancellation fees.

These are unprecedented times, so we encourage you all to look out for each other, facilitate mental health support and help to prevent stigma and discrimination by being kind to each other and avoid stereotypes when talking about the virus.

Please check back to the CSEG website for event updates or contact the CSEG office at (403) 262-0015 or
