I. Summary and Conclusions

Introduction

On behalf of the Canadian Society of Exploration Ceophysicists (CSEC), The Advisory Croup cond ucted a telephone survey with 350 randomly selected CSEC members in the Fall of 1997. The purpose of the research was to determine the constituency of the CSEC membership, to assess the interests of members in tech nical subjects, to identify the preferred content and format of current CSEC publications, and to exp lore other issues of importance to the Society.

The survey instrument was designed in close consu lta tion with the CSEC, and was based on question parameters provided by the Society. The sample size of 350 provided a +5% margin of error at the 95% confidence interval. In other words, if the same survey were conducted 20 times, the results would be within the stated margin 19 times out of 20.

Key Findings

Demographic Profile. Demographic analysis of the survey samp le revealed that close to three-quarters (71%) of respondents were aged 35 to 54, and more than nine out of ten (91% ) were male. In terms of education, 78% had completed a university education, almost half (47%) of whom had majored in geophysics.
